Consider These Moving Tips Before Closing

So, you are one signature away of buying your dream home but before you do consider your closing date. If you are selling one home to move into another you might want to consider overlapping the mortgage for a few days which, in most cases, will not break the bank but will certainly help you not to break your back either. Giving yourself a few days to clean your new home thouroughly is always a great idea. At the same time an empty home is certainly easier to paint if you need to do so.

Move your breakables yourself before the big moving day. Obviously I am talking about local moves here as long distance moves would be handled differently.  Hopefully by then you will have all of your breakables packed safely in boxes.  Start early to get boxes from the liquor stores or grocery stores.  Move the mirrors, art work, dishes and glasses yourself to help prevent breakage. You might also want to move the plants and some of your more expensive lamps so they don’t get damaged in the  move. If you have taken the time to clean the kitchen cupboards of your new home you can easily unpack and store the dishes and glasses right away as long as they are not wrapped in newspaper. One client packed all of her glassware with paper towels and when she unpacked them she put all the paper in a plastic bag to re-use at a later time. Packing breakables with face cloth, dish cloth and towels is also a great idea.

Packing to move doesn’t have to be a messy mayhem. The liquor stores and grocery stores are good places to find sturdy, smaller boxes for packing. Keep heavy objects such as books in smaller boxes. Remove the liners if you are packing larger objects or leave them in for glasses and bottles.  To make finding things easier you can purchase a full page label pack from Staples. It comes in a package of 100 sheets so if you cut them in four you will be able to attach to 400 boxes. For each label write down the room where the box will go and the content of the box. Attach the label to the outside of the box. If you number each box then you can also make a list of each one with its content. This is certainly a bit more time consumming but you will be glad you did when you are looking for your kids lunch box on Sunday night or the Saran Wrap for their sandwiches on Monday morning.

Allow the older children to pack their own stuff and put their names on the outside of the box. They can pack and unpack their own boxes. Help the movers and yourself by writing the room where each box goes. Avoid loading the boxes more than fifty pounds each. Use packing material such as bubble wrap, newspaper or tissue to cushion the contents.

Some of the packing supplies that you might want to keep handy include marking pen, paper, bubble wrap, newspaper and tissue, tape and scissors, measuring tape. You can purchase special boxes such as wardrobes and larger corrugated boxes from U-Haul. Pack your audio-video equipement in their original boxes if you still have them and be sure to label your cables before unplugging them. If there are screws to remove, tape them to the objects that they are removed from.

Have rugs and draperies cleaned before moving and leave them in the wrapping for the move.

Pack any medicine in a leak proof container and pack it in a suitcase along with some clothes and personal items that you will be using for the next couple of days such as deodorant, soap, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste. Carry all valuables items such as safety box, passport or identification with you. Pack sheets and pillows in large, durable, garbage bags. They will be easy to spot and you can make the beds right away after you’ve put the perishable food away.

Speaking of perishable food, wait until the last possible minute to pack the content of your fridge and freezer if that is an option for you. If you need to thaw out the freezer that might not be possible. Put the fridge content last on the truck that way when you get to your new home you can restock the fridge right away.
