Windows-XP-ends

Windows XP has been an operating system that for many has proven to be highly reliable and much more useful than other versions. But the operating system has grown old and Microsoft is pulling the plug on its support as of April 8, 2014. This means you won’t be getting security updates and patches from Windows Update anymore and instead will have to upgrade to a newer version of Windows if you still want that privilege. So, what are you supposed to do to survive the countdown? It might be time to consider upgrading to Windows 7 or 8. If you are a die-hard fan of Windows XP unfortunately you will be fighting a losing battle because eventually developers will stop supporting Windows XP in their hardware.

So for now get yourself a good firewall and security suite which will give you some added protection and eventually the same will go for your anti-virus software. And don’t fall for the free pop ups that offer you fake virus scan. Spend the money that you need and protect yourself. Your firewall maker should be able to cover up the loose ends for now.

Disable any remote desktop, particularly on Windows XP, as they are not the most secure piece of software. Lack of updates will make you vulnerable so just disable it entirely. Microsoft does offer a tutorial on how to do this. Check it out on their website: Microsoft tutorial.

Even though you still have some time to upgrade because about 30 percent of world users still use Windows XP eventually you’ll have no choice. Make sure that anything you install on your computer is from a trusty vendor and should pass through Virus Total even though you already have a virus scanner. Also put limits on your account if you sign in as the administrator it’s time to change that. Limiting the amount of access with the account that you sign in will reduce the damages should you become the target of a virus. As a last resort you could use your computer as an offline machine. The kids can use it to learn to type, do pictures, learn to play solitaire because pretty soon Windows XP will be leaving you…Solitaire.
